Big rabbits
Inexplicably, Luton & District painted at least two of their Leyland Nationals into minibus 'Hoppanstopper' livery for use on Leighton Buzzard local routes. 488/572 are seen in the High Street in July 1988, the latter having come from United Counties via Milton Keynes City Bus, one of seventeen acquired in 1987.

It's 110 seater capacity will not be taxed on a 182 journey to Hitchin (just one passenger upstairs!), a service that currently employs Dennis Darts, although ordinary Olympians still sometimes put in an appearance.

New kids on the block
Bedford town services were revamped by Stagecoach United Counties from 6 September 1993, twenty-one Volvo B6/Alexander Dash forty-seaters taking from the Routemasters and other double-deckers. First of the bunch was 401, loading in Midland Road a couple of days later.

Luton Airport 17-06-1981. Luton Airport bought 3 Mercedes-Benz 0305G in March 1981. I remember them as bodied by Heuliez but researching the buses I found that they were bodied by Lex Maxeta
Anyway, I went there in the off-chance of seeing one but they were operating inside the closed-off airport perimeter. But, when I asked a guard if I could make a few photographs he just let me in. Amazing, nowadays at any airport you probably have more chance of being arrested on the spot if you asked something like that...

Prototype FRM-type Routemaster double deck motor bus fleet No FRM1 registration number KGY4D, 1966

This bus, FRM1, was a prototype front entrance Routemaster. The front entrance allowed the driver to monitor passenger flow on and off the bus. It never went into full-scale production. Other similar vehicles were already mass-produced and available for purchase, so this remains the last bus to be designed especially for London Transport. FRM1 operated on several routes in the London area before it was used for the Round London Sightseeing tour. It eventually passed to London Transport Museum in 1983.
